Rad Power Bikes Faces Possible Shutdown by 2026 — A Look at What Went Wrong
Seattle-based electric bike manufacturer Rad Power Bikes — once one of the most influential brands in the U.S. e-bike market — is now fighting to survive amid what it calls “significant financial challenges.”
The company recently filed a formal notice in Washington state under the WARN Act, signaling the potential for a complete shutdown of operations as early as January 2026. If this occurs, around 64 employees would lose their jobs at the company’s Seattle headquarters in the Ballard neighborhood, including executive staff, customer service representatives, and bike mechanics.
Rad says the filing is not a final decision, but rather “advance written notice of a potential cessation of operations.”
From DIY Mods to an E-Bike Industry Leader
Founded in 2007 by Mike Radenbaugh and Ty Collins while they were students at Humboldt State University, Rad Power Bikes evolved from custom e-bike conversions into a global direct-to-consumer powerhouse in 2015.
The brand surged during the pandemic e-mobility boom, raising hundreds of millions in funding and hitting a $1.65 billion valuation in 2021. At the time, Rad was celebrated as a top consumer hardware startup and a driving force behind U.S. electric bike adoption.
What Caused Rad Power Bikes to Struggle?
Rad cites several factors behind its sharp downturn:
- Rapid decline in demand after COVID-era peak sales
- Tariff pressures impacting product costs
- Macroeconomic challenges affecting consumer spending
Previous restructuring attempts included multiple layoffs and retreating from major international markets such as the U.K. and EU.
Can Rad Power Bikes Still Be Saved?
Despite the turmoil, Rad is still selling e-bikes online and promoting holiday deals. Leadership says they are actively exploring new funding, partnerships, or even a full acquisition. The company revealed that one “very promising” deal was nearly completed, but fell through at the last moment.
If a shutdown becomes unavoidable, Rad expects it to be permanent, affecting all operations and facilities. Layoffs would take effect January 9, 2026, or within two weeks of that date.
Bottom Line: A Warning for the E-Bike Industry
Rad Power Bikes helped shape modern e-bike culture in North America — making electric bikes more accessible, stylish, and mainstream. But today, the brand that once led the market is in a fight for its future.
As the e-bike industry continues to grow and evolve, Rad Power Bikes’ story is a powerful reminder: explosive success can be fragile — and survival is never guaranteed.
